Mrs. Kozal’s Favorites:

Favorite saint and why: St. Catherine of Siena is my favorite saint.  I went to St. Catherine’s for grade school, Siena Heights University for College and studied abroad in Siena, Italy while there as a student.  I was able to spend days drawing in her home, see her relic in the parish church dedicated to her father St. Dominic and find her personal history inspirational particularly for the time period in which she lived.  My two daughters have Kathryn and Siena as their middle names in her honor.  My favorite quote by her is “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire!”
Favorite moment at NDA: Halloween at NDA is always memorable.  My favorite Halloween costume was in 2014-15 when I dressed up with my two daughters in costumes from the Princess Diaries.  I dressed up as Julia Andrew’s character the Queen of Genovia.  Meghan, a senior, was the polished Princess Mia and Chloe, a 7th grader, the young Mia.
Qualities your favorite teacher possessed: My favorite teacher was Fr. David Van Horn who taught me Art History in College.  He was the embodiment of the IB Learner profile!  He was knowledgeable about so many diverse subjects and a true lifelong learner: a Catholic Priest, and artist, a Fulbright Scholar in Glaze Chemistry which he studied in Italy!  His passion for Asian and African Art was infectious. I was inspired by the richness of his life and the depth of care he had for all people.
Favorite activity outside NDA: I love gardening and cooking.
Favorite place in northwest Ohio: The Toledo Museum of Art
My teaching philosophy I borrow from the Disney movie Ratatouille character Gusteau who said “You must be imaginative, strong-hearted. You must try things that may not work, and you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul. What I say is true – anyone can create art (cook)… but only the fearless can be great.

Favorite saint and why: My favorite Saint is very-soon- to-be Saint Mother Teresa because she sets such a wonderful example of true Christian discipleship, as well as service to the poor and marginalized of our world.

Favorite moment at NDA: My favorite moment at NDA was the first time I experienced May Crowning- I remember the beauty of all those flowers and the sweet sound of the songs that were sung bringing me to tears of awe and gratitude.

Qualities your favorite teacher possessed: My favorite teacher was passionate about the subject that she taught, fun-loving, caring and supportive.

Favorite activity outside NDA: My favorite activity outside of NDA is simply spending time with friends and family. When I have a little bit of extra time, I also enjoy reading, cooking and going for walks outside.

Favorite place in northwest Ohio: My favorite place in nw Ohio would have to be Oak Openings because it is so beautiful, quiet and peaceful.

My teaching philosophy is borrowed from one of my favorite priests, Father Dave Nuss….students don’t care what you know until they know that you care. I believe in the importance of educating the whole person- not just the mind, but the spirit and soul as well. I am so grateful for the opportunity that try and do that everyday here at NDA!
