Advanced studies
As northwest Ohio’s only International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) school , you have more ways to earn college credit in high school than at any other school in Northwest Ohio. Along with college courses and College Credit Plus, you could earn a semester or more of college credits.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
We are the only school in northwest Ohio to offer the internationally recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) program. IB recognizes that in a world where knowledge is at everyone’s fingertips, knowing how to ask the right questions and get insightful answers is the key to using that knowledge. In this advanced program of study, you’ll learn to be:
- An inquirer
- Knowledgeable
- A thinker
- A communicator
- Principled
- Open-minded
- Caring
- A risk-taker
- Balanced
- Reflective
Our juniors and seniors can choose to earn an IB diploma or earn a certificate in one of six IB core areas of study: Language A1 (English), Individuals and Societies (History), Mathematics, The Arts (Theatre Arts), Experimental Sciences (Biology), and Second Language (Spanish). Core courses are offered in Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). All HL courses run over two years. SL courses may run over one or two years. For more on IB, see NDA’s IB page or contact the NDA IB Coordinator Angie Joseph at ajoseph@nda.org.
Advanced Placement (AP)
In Advanced Placement Courses (AP) courses are college-level classes that a student can take in high school. These course curricula are rigorous in that they are in fact, college courses. AP courses conclude with tests given in the spring. Although college credit may be earned on the strength of the test score, not all colleges grant college credit for AP courses. College Credit Plus
College Credit Plus (CCP) is a program sponsored by the state of Ohio for high school students who are U.S. Citizens and OHIO RESIDENTS in grades 7-12. Through the CCP program, NDA students are permitted to apply for participation in early college course options by taking coursework from colleges located within a 30- mile radius of the NDA campus.
Notre Dame Academy partners with the University of Toledo and Owens Community College to provide the majority of CCP courses. However, students do take courses from other higher educational providers in the Northwest Ohio region.
Students who wish to participate in College Credit Plus (CCP) early college options must attend a mandatory student & parent meeting in January and complete an Intent to Participate form. The Intent to Participate form must be submitted to Mrs. Desmond no later than April 1st. Students are also responsible for creating a SAFE Account through the Ohio Department of Education and must complete all accompanying application forms, attend meetings and registration training sessions. Additionally, students are subject to admission guidelines established by each participating college or university. Failure to meet deadlines will disqualify any student from participating in the CCP program.
Students who opt to take CCP courses are encouraged to take 100% asynchronous on- line courses that occur during the school day to allow students maximum flexibility with their scheduling needs, but also allow them the benefit of enjoying their high school experience. Students’ grades are weighted 1.0 and applied to their G.P.A. if students submit an approved Credit Flex form and meet outlined criteria.
College Credit Plus participation and course selections are not guaranteed. For more information and possible pathways, please reference college CCP websites.
